--------------------------------------------------------------

Spread out over four discs and lovingly packaged, Cherry Red’s Millions Like Us tells the tale of the mod revival, one of the most insular and focused music scenes to ever come out of the U.K.
Inspired by the success of the Jam, who played with all the pent-up energy of the Who and sported the dress sense of the nattiest ’60s mods, and the release of the film Quadrophenia, England exploded with bands eager to follow in the Jam’s wake, and Millions collects up most, if not all, of them.
From the most obscure corners of the scene to the bands who almost made it (the Lambrettas, Secret Affair, the Chords, Squire — each of whom get two songs), there are tons of groups made up of young lads in stylish gear looking to express their frustrations, celebrate their small freedoms, bash out ringing chords, and impress the young modettes in the crowd. For the most part, the bands involved play with enough energy and fire to obscure their obvious debt to the past, and the Jam, and the collection is filled with tons of great songs.

Split between rave-ups about scooters, bank holidays, and girls, and empowering mini-epics about the “kids” and the scene, there’s a positivity to the music that must have provided a nice alternative for people who wanted loud and aggressive music, but also wanted to hear good melodies and look smart. To that end, a great deal of the songs here share a lot with the power pop scene that was operating in the U.S. at the same time. Check out Secret Affair’s “My World,” which sounds like it could have been on a Raspberries album. There’s also a strong R&B thread running through the scene, mostly in a good Northern soul/Motown-inspired way, sometimes in a corny, overly reverent way (like the Q-Tips’ tepid cover of “S.Y.S.L.J.F.M [The Letter Song]”).

The set takes a few interesting detours here and there, gathering up some music on the fringes of the scene like L.A. band the Untouchables’ “Free Yourself,” the twee pop psych of Direct Hits’ lovely “Modesty Blaise,” the modern girl group snap of Dee Walker’s “Snap Back,” and the bubblegummy pop of the JetSet’s “Wednesday Girl.” These diversions show how far the mod revival’s reach extended, and it keeps the set from being merely four hours of bands who wanted to be the Jam’s little brothers. The fourth disc shows that this urge was very strong and long-lasting, since even by 1989 there were still bands in deep thrall to the classic mod sound, though peppered by psychedelic leanings (the Leepers’ “Paint a Day”) and early acid jazz (the James Taylor Quartet) too.

Like most box sets, Millions Like Us isn’t perfect and goes on a little too long, but overall it’s a fun, exhaustive, and inspired look back at a vibrant scene that tends to be overlooked, but really shouldn’t be.

Legendary jam band Gov’t Mule release their latest live album, Dub Side of the Mule, on April 7th through Evil Teen Records.
The album continues the band’s extensive live archival project begun with last year’s Pink Floyd tribute, Dark Side of the Mule, and the instrumental jazz odyssey Sco-Mule, released earlier this year. Dub Side captures a 2006 New Year’s Eve concert at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Amidst the three hour long set, Gov’t Mule took an hour to perform an all-reggae set with Jamaican icon Toots Hibbert (Toots & The Maytals) as a special guest.
Together, they covered Hibbert’s classic dub material like “Pressure Drop”, “54-46 Was My Number”, and even his take on Radiohead’s “Let Down”. They also delivered one of the earliest ive performances of their joint rendition of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”, released on Mile High a year later.

The rest of Gov’t Mule’s set boasted appearances from frontman Warren Haynes’ former Allman Brothers Band bandmate Greg Allman as well as Blues Traveler’s John Popper. Three-disc deluxe CD edition features the entire three hour performance.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Beth Hart, has never sounded better (musically and spiritually) that she does on her new album, Better Than Home. What makes Better Than Home quite possibly her greatest album is that it is her most introspective work ever, because it goes to the depth of her soul, revealing terrible pain in her past, family issues and personal demons as well as her coming to grips with them and using that knowledge to find the real beauty in her life.

Jack White has cracked open The White Stripes‘ vault once again for the release of a new live album and concert film. The latest installment of Third Man Records’ Vault subscription series contains Under Amazonian Lights, a previously unreleased live recording of the band’s show in Manaus, Brazil on June 1st, 2005. The 23-song setlist featured both acoustic and electric renditions of “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known”, a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lovesick Blues”, and an unamplified version of “We’re Going to Be Friends”.

According to a press release: “Words do not ably describe the beauty of the Teatro Amazonas nor the furor riled up by the White Stripes appearance. Not only was there fear that the amplification of the band would cause the plaster in the building to crack and possible fall and injure attendees, but out of custom/fear/lord-knows-what the crowd remained seated until being explicitly asked to stand from the stage by Jack White himself. If that wasn’t enough, during the show Jack and Meg ventured outside the venue to play an entirely unamplified version of “We Are Going to Be Friends” for the assembled multitude of fans unable to purchase tickets and watching the performance via closed-circuit feed. The resultant melee was arguably a riot and was lovingly captured by the film crew documenting that evening’s importance. All together what it makes is one of the best true rock and roll moments of the past decade. Heck, Jack White even got married that day.”

Along with Under Amazonian Lights, the latest Vault offering also includes a 7-inch single that features an early White solo offering recorded around 2000 called “Let You Down.” White handled all the instrumentation, as well as the multi-tracked four-part harmonies. The lyrics — “No I’m never, no I’m never, no I’m never gonna let you down now” — were later repurposed for the White Stripes’ track “The Nurse.” The B-side contains a long-forgotten White Stripes instrumental outtake “Ain’t No Sweeter Than Rita Blues,” which was recorded during the Get Behind Me Satan sessions.

A companion of sorts to the previous Bee Gees boxes The Studio Albums 1967-1968 and The Warner Bros. Years 1987-1991 (and, in a roundabout way, the international release The Festival Album Collection: 1965-1967), 2015’s 1974-1979 boxes up the Bee Gees’ most popular albums (plus 1974’s Mr. Natural, a flop that nevertheless pointed the way toward the group’s late-’70s style): 1975’s Main Course, 1976’s Children of the World, and 1979’s Spirits Having Flown, plus the music the group made for 1977’s Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Those hits — “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “More Than a Woman,” “Emotion” — are contained on the 11-track bonus disc called The Miami Years, along with a couple of outtakes, B-sides (“Rest Your Love on Me,” “It Doesn’t Matter Much to Me”) and a 12″ promo mix of “Stayin’ Alive.” This isn’t the extent of the late-’70s rarities the band has to offer and the albums aren’t remastered, so this isn’t as enticing to hardcore fans as it could’ve been, but it’s nevertheless a nice, easy way to get the biggest Bee Gees albums at once

Bob Dylan (/ˈdɪlən/; born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, artist, and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation. Nevertheless, early songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the American civil rights and anti-war movements. Leaving his initial base in the American folk music revival, Dylan's six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" altered the range of popular music in 1965. His mid-1960s recordings, backed by rock musicians, reached the top end of the United States music charts while also attracting denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement.
